Rapid Fire: Rugged Suppressors Announces Another Silencer

Apparently, the good folks at Rugged Suppressors have kicked it into high gear at their South Carolina headquarters. Last week, the crew led by Henry Graham and Michael Derdziak pulled the covers off their new compact Razor 762 silencer, and today, they surprised everyone with the release of their first pistol suppressor, the Obsidian 45. At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped another can before or during SHOT Show. After a relatively quiet period following the Surge 762 release, it now looks like Rugged is ready to capture some market share.

Like many pistol cans we’ve seen released this year (and Rugged’s Surge 762), the Obsidian can be configured in two different lengths. In its full-size configuration, the Obsidian measures 8.6” in length while the short setup measures just 6.7” long. According to both Rugged and independent testing from Silencer Shop, the Obsidian 45 is the quietest .45 ACP suppressor ever conceived (129.3 dB at the muzzle according to Silencer Shop). Perhaps as intriguing as its performance is the fact that the Obsidian’s pistons create a full gas seal with the end cap. According to Rugged, the irritating blowback and debris that shooters fight when shooting a suppressed pistol can largely be blamed on slotted pistons that do not adequately seal with the end cap.

If there is anything else to be said about the Obsidian, it’s that the suppressor has Henry Graham written all over it. It is by no means a copy of the Octane series he is credited for, but it is certainly based on the lessons he learned while working on his previous designs. It really is the logical next step in the Octane lineage, and it is going to be very interesting to see how other upcoming cans like Dead Air’s Ghost and Liberty’s Cosmic compare to the Obsidian 45.
