New PTR Reverse Stretch MP5 – Best of Both Worlds!

Before the introduction of the POF and PTR guns,  a custom roller-delayed gun like a reverse-stretch MP5 would cost shooters well over $2,000.

But what exactly is a reverse-stretch MP5, and why would someone want one – let alone pay high dollar prices for it?

Essentially, a reverse-stretch MP5 is a hybrid of the MP5K and the full-sized MP5. It utilizes the shorter barrel of the K model and combines it with the longer receiver of the full-sized gun.

Why?

Because it affords the shooter a more compact firearm without the inherently more violent (and thus less reliable) standard K recoil impulse.

One added benefit of the PTR’s use of a full-sized receiver is that it permits the gun to use standard MP5 stocks, which are more plentiful and generally less expensive than K-model ones. The only exception is the factory collapsible stock which runs around $600 currently. But aftermarket stocks from AC Unity or even fixed stocks, are normally under $100.

As someone who owns a reverse-stretch MP5, I can attest they are very pleasant guns to shoot. They also run very well suppressed because the added length of the recoil operation helps negate the increased back pressure of running a can.

Plus, if a shooter c-clamps the forearm and aggressively leans into the shots, hammered pairs are a joke, even out to 75 yards.

In addition to the reverse-stretch gun, PTR also unveiled their own take on the collapsible stock. Constructed from a combination of aluminum and steel, the new stock feels very robust and includes a number of desirable features like QD sling mounts.

The new PTR is 100% American-made, and according to the rep, should retail for around $1,700. While not cheap, this is still vastly less expensive than a custom gun build. Whether the South Carolinian company can move a ton of these guns is yet to be seen. Between MKE and SDS, the market is currently being flooded with inexpensive MP5 clones.
