Heckler & Koch is Bringing the MP5K Back to America
May 19, 2016After years of speculation, it looks like Heckler & Koch is finally bringing factory-built MP5s back to the United States. Yesterday afternoon, the company confirmed that the new SP5K – essentially a rebooted SP89/MP5K pistol – will be present at this week’s NRA Annual Meetings and is expected to hit stores sometime in July. It won’t be cheap, though. HK’s MSRP on the SP5K is a salty $2,699. With a wide variety of licensed and unlicensed clones already available for around half that price (or slightly more), I expect only the most dedicated HK fans will spring for the German gun.
In many ways, the announcement is bittersweet. It’s nice to see HK trying to contend with Germany’s absurd export laws. After all, German law is really responsible for keeping HK’s most intriguing firearms out of the safes of American collectors. However, the SP5K’s pricing is truly unreasonable. The MP5 is a 50-year-old design and it is amazing that these guns still fetch such crazy prices. Ultimately, I fear that the products (almost inevitable) failure in the US market could damage HK’s outlook on future projects.
Regardless, I plan to stop by the HK booth this weekend to check in on this little blaster.
