What are the Most Popular Firearms of 2020?
What are the most popular firearms sold in this year? The answers might surprise you.
Each month the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) provides data from GunBroker.com using MPI (Market Place Insight). From this data, the NSSF compiles a list of the most sold firearms in the country. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular models.
Top 10 Revolvers
Texas, Florida, and California lead the way with the number of revolvers purchased in June. At the top of the list of sold revolvers is the Heritage Arms Rough Rider followed by the Ruger Wrangler, both of which are .22 LR revolvers with classic cowboy styling. No doubt that price plays a factor in the top two slots since they both come in under $200. Not surprising is the majority of the rest of the list is made up of .357 revolvers.
Top 10 Semi Auto Pistols
When it comes to Semi-auto pistols, Texas, Florida and California are again the top three states for sales in June. The Sig Sauer P320 is the most popular handgun, and you shouldn’t be surprised with all the numerous models on the market and the Army adoption. However, the Glock 19 actually holds two positions and could be the actual winner if combined.
In the fifth spot is the second Sig on the list the P365. Sig, Glock, and Springfield all had two of the top ten handguns. A surprising addition to the list is the Ruger 57, and from the other lists, it is clear that the popularity of the 5.7 round is growing.
Top 10 AK Pistols
When it comes to AK-style pistols the market doesn’t give you a lot of choices, compared to the standard pistol category. IWI holds three spots with the Galil Ace in both the 5th and 10th position. We interpret this as two different models.
Top 10 Carbine Pistols
Texas, Florida, and Arizona are the top states for both AK pistols and PCCs. This list includes pistol caliber carbine pistols and pistols chambered in 556. Of note is the number three position with the CMMG Banshee line of firearms. Since their introduction, the Banshee line has become more popular each year.
Top 10 Revolver Calibers
To get a broad sense of the firearms being sold, you need to look at the top calibers being sold in each category. For the revolver calibers, .357 magnum is at the top, and since there are probably more 357 revolvers on the market than anything else, it shouldn’t be a surprise. In second place is .22 LR which is also reflected in the top two models of revolvers sold.
Top 10 Bolt Action Rifle Calibers
The 6.5 Creedmoor is at the top of the bolt action rifle calibers sold. Since its introduction, the 6.5 has continued to grow in popularity due to more manufacturers chambering precision rifles in the caliber. However, the 308 is in the number two spot showing it is still a standby for many shooters. A nice standout is the number seven spot with the .17 HMR, a great caliber for small varmint and youth shooters.
Top 10 AR Rifle Calibers
The 5.56mm remains the number-one choice for AR rifle calibers. Not a surprise since it was what the platform was originally chambered in. A few things to point out are that 9mm occupies two spots, as does 5.56/223. Also, the 5.7 makes the list at number nine, likely due to the number of new rifles that are chambered in that caliber.
Top 10 Other Semi-Auto Rifle Calibers
Looking at the list of other semi-auto rifles sold by the caliber, we see a few standouts. First that the .30 Carbine ranks so high in third place, keeping in mind that these are new guns sold, not used. It is interesting that there are that many new .30 Carbine rifles on the market. Lastly, the .243 makes this list as the top bolt action caliber list.
Top 10 Bolt Action Rifles
The Remington 700 holds the top spot, and it shouldn’t be a surprise. Not only is the rifle used by the military, but it is also considered a gold standard with a lot of aftermarket support. Ruger is doing well with the RPR and American’s holding two spots each.
Top 10 Semi-Auto Rifles
Ruger holds the top spot for the most semi-auto rifles sold in 2020 with the AR-556. The price point and availability most likely play a part in the sales, since the firearm is on the lower end of the price scale for AR-15 variants. Looking at the data for average price sold, everything on the list is under $750 with the exception of the Springfield Saint.
Top 10 Over Under Shotguns
When most people think of over and under shotguns, they don’t think inexpensive; however, the Federal Armament FTS is exactly that. While it holds the number one spot for 2020 it also averaged a retail price of $290, almost half of the next most expensive shotgun on this list.
Four shotguns on the list retail for over $2,000: the Beretta and all three Brownings. Looking at the list, it seems that buyers either go for a $2,000+ shotgun or sub $550 option.
Top 10 Pump Action Shotguns
Mossberg appears on the pump-action top sellers list six times, but what is interesting is there are only three brands on the list. Remington and KEL-TEC both hold two spots each. All three brands have a strong following in this category and aftermarket support.
Top 10 Semi-Auto Shotguns
The IWI TS12 is an interesting bullpup shotgun that holds 15 shells and is under 29 inches long and tops the list of top ten semi-auto shotguns. In second place is a sub $300 shotgun, the Uzkon AR shotgun. Looking at the rest of the list, it seems that price is a driver in sales since most of the guns on the list are under $700.
