Trailblazer Firearms Releases New Compact Pivot Rifle
It was on the first floor on the first day of the SHOT Show when I discovered what we Boomers call a space-age-looking rifle. The Pivot rifle by Trailblazer Firearms could feature in a futuristic show or movie without modification. I did not know what to think about the rifle when I saw it. Then I was approached by Spencer Voigt, Trailblazer Firearms’ Marketing Director.Â
Spencer asked if I wanted a closer look at the Pivot and a demonstration. That’s when I realized the Pivot’s full potential. This firearm is likely the best iteration of a backpack/tennis racket bag hideout compact folding rifle.
The typical compact rifle either folds or consists of two parts that must be mated together. Putting these two parts together becomes difficult in dark and stressful situations. Some models from other brands and systems prevent using good optics, and some require using fine motor skills during stressful times. Neither design is optimum. Such designs are now waning in popularity because the idea needs real-world execution.Â
Cutting Edge Folding Rifle Design
The Pivot is the definition of simple deployment. Only gross motor skills are necessary to swing the Pivot’s upper receiver 180 degrees after a press of a large button. An extra Glock-compatible magazine can be kept below the stock, readily accessible by the supporting hand for quick magazine changes. Any optic of the shooter’s choice can be attached to the 20 1913 rails at the rear of the receiver. Six 1913 rail slots reside in the front, behind the threaded muzzle. Trailblazer Firearms wisely did not add a full-length rail. Less is more here since this lightweight “take anywhere” weapon weighs 5.5 pounds empty.Â
You can charge the Pivot using the non-reciprocating charging handle to the left of the rifle. Think HK here. This design means that left-handed shooters cannot move the charging handle to the right side of the receiver. However, the charging handle is the perfect size for manipulation AK-style, from the top or bottom, with the right hand by left-handed shooters. The shooter does not change their shooting position when reloading. Â
Compact and Legal
The Pivot was initially designed in 2012 but was launched ten years later in 2022. During those ten years, compact firearms enthusiasts know the story/saga of the pistol brace as a curiosity; then legal to the shoulder; then legal off the shoulder; then illegal; then legal again; and now apparently illegal. Or not? Â
The Pivot has no problems with ever-changing ATF decisions since it has a 16-inch barrel and an actual stock. Our gun rights are safe with ownership of the Pivot. For now?Â
Made in the USA
These rifles are designed and manufactured entirely in North Carolina, USA. I did not ask, but given the significant military presence in the Fort Bragg area, I’m pretty confident that Trailblazer Firearms employs veterans.Â
The Pivot retails for $1795, but a quick review of online prices revealed that you could get one for about $300 less than the listed price. Innovation and quality have value. The Pivot exudes both. Â
I will acquire a Pivot shortly for live fire testing and provide a subsequent report. I anticipate excellent results.
