TenPoint Vengent S440 Crossbow Review
I got my hands on the new TenPoint Vengent S440 crossbow, and this bow is super accurate and fast! There is no comparison to the crossbows of just a few years ago. This joker is just stinking accurate and a feat of engineering with added safety measures and a super-easy cocking system. There’s nothing else like it on the market. Now on to the details.Â
Speed & Convenience
The reason it’s called the Vengent S440 is that the bolts are traveling up to 440 feet per second. It’s got a great trigger, and it’s super compact. It’s less than six inches wide once you cock it.Â
When you put it side-by-side with your traditional crossbow, there’s just no comparison. Most crossbows are – let’s face it – a compound bow put on its side with a trigger added. Your traditional crossbow is going to be heavier and has a wider profile than the S440, which is TenPoints’ narrowest crossbow ever at 5.8 inches cocked. The S440 also weighs a full half-pound less than TenPoint’s previous flagship models.
The TenPoint Vengent S440 is ultra-lightweight, and the way they do this not only adds to its portability, but it creates a super-accurate shooting experience. The S440’s TECH-X stock features multiple weight-reducing cutouts, as well as a hollow pocket for the ACUslide cocking system.
S440 Features
So, let me tell you about this amazing cocking system. It’s extremely quiet and super safe. To cock it, all you do is push the unlocking lever and move the slide down the barrel into place. It has a wide safety shelf that keeps your fingers, thumbs and any other appendages safely out of the way. Listen for the two clicks – one is your dry fire inhibitor, and the next is your trigger seer. Next, you take your cocking handle (which is conveniently stored in the buttstock) and using just five pounds of energy, you rotate the handle until the crossbow is cocked – about twenty rotations or so.
Now, if you’ve ever cocked a standard crossbow, you recognize what an awesome feature this is. On a traditional crossbow, you’re going to use a couple of primitive cocking strings to pull the cocking mechanism in place, and it uses a ton more power than the S440’s five pounds. I’ve had my own nasty run-in with this traditional crossbow cocking system – once the cocking strings sheared off and nearly took my pinky finger with it. I’ve got scars to prove it.
Another feature I love is how safe this thing is to de-cock. If you’ve got one of the higher-end crossbows that use a similar cocking handle, and you’ve ever let go – you get that awful ratcheting noise that sounds like a rollercoaster going off. Not with the S440. It’s got a built-in braking system. You can change your mind mid-cock and just let go – the handle isn’t going anywhere. So you can wind it up, then turn around and unwind it, and it’s going to stay quiet so you don’t scare off that wild hog or turkey.
TenPoint S440 Accuracy
Now, let’s talk about how accurate this thing is. Just watch my video review and see how tightly I was able to group my nocks at 20 and 60 yards. The TenPoint Vengent S440 boasts an amazing quad cable system that uses four cables instead of your standard two. What this means is you get rid of cam lean, which can affect how straight your nock travels downrange. I got super-impressive accuracy out of this thing, especially when I combined it with the included RangeMaster Pro Variable Speed Scope. Instead of magnification, you set it to your actual bolt speed. I got very consistent results when I set it to 405 fps, whether I was shooting at 20 yards or 60 yards. The scope BDC reticle works and is impressive but the quality of the glass is lacking.
I experienced zero trigger creep and very little noise, it’s quieter than a suppressed rifle for a super-accurate, super-quiet hunting experience. It’s just a stinking accurate and well-engineered crossbow, and at around $2,000 for the bow, scope, six EVO-X Centerpunch Carbon crossbow arrows, and quiver – you’ve got everything you need to get out in the field and get to hunting.
Final Thoughts
The TenPoint Vengent S440 crossbow is available in two different colors Graphite and Veil Camo like the version I have. Overall the S440 was everything it’s made to be: consistent, fast, accurate, quiet, convenient, safe, the included peripherals such as the quiver, level, and optic, were a little disappointing. The bolts rattled in the quiver, the level wasn’t level any way I mounted it, and the scope glass quality was lacking, although the BDC reticle was impressively accurate and reliable.Â
