SIG Unveils Cross Bolt and .277 SIG FURY

The precision rifle market is pretty crowded even without the SIG Cross Bolt. But there is always room for growth – especially for companies looking to improve and innovate. One of the ways to do that, is to offer a brand new cartridge that offers substantial performance gains over contemporary precision rounds like 6.5 Creedmoor and .308.Â
SIG did just that, with the introduction of their Cross Bolt and .277 SIG Fury round. While the rifle is fairly conventional, being a Mauser action housed inside a handy aluminum chassis, some of the other details help separate the gun from its competitors.
For example, the Cross Bolt features a unique magazine release designed to compromise between speed of use, and protection from accidental ejection. It also features one of the most robust, yet fully adjustable precision rifle stocks on the market. Think of it as a cross between a folding Galil stock, an MCX stock and the Magpul PRS stock. Pretty wild.
As for the ammunition, the .277 SIG Fury is in a league of its own. Instead of pushing current ballistic technology to its limits, SIG reinvented the bullet case. Using three different types of metal in its construction, the .277 SIG Fury achieves internal pressure levels of 80,000 PSI – nearly 60% higher than standard rifle rounds.Â
This equates to a quantum leap in achievable velocities in small cartridges. Out of a 16in barrel, the 140gr SIG Fury leaves the barrel at a blistering 3,000 fps! And that’s from a round smaller than 6.5 Creedmoor. Truly amazing stuff.
As of publication, SIG ammo experts are warning not to reload this round yet, purely because there is so little data on it. But should shooters overcome this, it could lead to incredible developments in ammunition technology, and unbelievably high velocity wildcat rounds.
Both the new round and the Cross Bolt are slated for a late summer release, with the Cross Bolt retailing for around $1600. For more information, visit https://www.sigsauer.com/
