Firebird 50 Bio Detonating Targets Review

How do you spice up your target practice? With detonating targets of course! I’ve been looking for reactive targets for Marksmanship Camp that work with .22LR and finally found something that works. Firebird 50 Bio targets are a safe and reliable alternative to binary targets.

Legalities

The Firebird targets are actually considered a pyrotechnic and not an explosive. This means that they are compliant with federal laws and are legal to transport. This is different from binary targets, like Tannerite, that are considered explosive material and cannot be transported once mixed. The Firebird targets are legal in most states except the infringement states California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Check your local laws to be sure whether you can get a hold of these fun-to-use targets.

Shut Up and Shoot!

The Firebird 50 Bio doesn’t require any mixing and can be stored and handled easily. The sound is about like an unsuppressed shotgun; technically the company states it is 120db at 33 feet. To use the targets, just peel the backing and stick to a hard surface and you are ready to shoot.

Something to note: You have to shoot the target from the front (logo side) for it to work. If you shoot from the back, it might not go off. As you can see in the video, it will stick to just about anything you can think of. They are powerful enough to blow a hole through a sheet of plywood, so don’t put it on something you don’t want damaged.

The disc is 50mm (2 inches) in diameter. You want to be about 50 feet away from them while shooting, and a two-inch target is a good size to be a challenge.

Using them on clays and shotguns makes for an interesting way to change up your practice or surprise your friends. The sound of the detonation is louder when the Firebird is in the air. But to make it even louder, stick it to a steel target.

Also as the name suggests they are biodegradable so you won’t have bits laying around your range.

The Firebird 50 Bio worked with subsonic 22lr, pellet guns, and even arrows. The minimum velocity recommended is 1,000 fps. Since they are sonic-welded, they are water-resistant. I submerged one in a water bottle for about two minutes and it worked without issue.

Stick it on metal, plastic, wood, or watermelons — the uses are only limited by your imagination.
