Unlike traditional bolt-action systems, the Blaser R8 employs a unique straight-pull design that sets it apart. Gone are the lug-type bolt-locking system and the rotating bolt. Instead, the R8 features an innovative bolt head consisting of a ring of thin, spring-like fingers known as a collet. These fingers encircle the bolt, about a half-inch behind the boltface. When the bolt is closed, it cams forward and backward rather than turning like a conventional bolt. This motion causes the collet fingers to wedge outward, engaging a circular ring integrated into the rear of the barrel. With 360 degrees of lockup, the R8 ensures unrivaled stability and safety.
Moreover, the Blaser R8’s modular design enhances its versatility. Interchangeable bolt heads, magazine inserts, and barrels allow shooters to transform the same rifle to shoot anything from .22 Long Rifle rimfire rounds to .500 Jeffery dangerous-game cartridges. The barrel attachment mechanism further streamlines the process. A sturdy alloy frame serves as a bedding block embedded into the stock. The frame features recesses for the bolt’s bilateral rails, while the barrel attaches to the bedding block using two easily accessible screws.
